Parks and Rec is one of those community organizations will enjoy or have enjoyed. They are such an institution that they’re easy to take for granted. We are proud to add them to our 2016 Community Partner Pints for a Purpose Series!
We’ll be raising funds for the Youth Enrichment Scholarship Fund.
The Youth Enrichment Scholarship (YES) Fund was created in 2006 to create a revenue source for youth in the community to participate in the vast program offerings by the Parks and Recreation. The scholarship pays a portion of the participation fee for various programs to individuals who qualify. The scholarship fund was named in memory of Leon Berrong, a long time Commissioner of the Parks and Recreation.
One of the biggest challenges facing our youth today is leading a healthy lifestyle by becoming more active in their everyday lives. The population that the Youth Enrichment Scholarship Fund benefits is shown to be at an even greater risk of an unhealthy lifestyle, thus Parks and Recreation’s goal is to make it easier and more affordable to participate in these active programs. Activities such as soccer, basketball, gymnastics, dance, and flag football will not only help provide a more active lifestyle, but will also provide each individual with other important life skills such as building character and instilling discipline. We live in an era wherein so much of a modern child’s daily activity involves retreating into a private e-world of cell phones, tablets and Xbox. Team sports and group activities forces the youth of today to work together, to constantly communicate, and to help one another. It teaches them to be part of something bigger than themselves.
The Youth Enrichment Scholarship Fund provides an opportunity for children that they otherwise may never get to take advantage of. The mission of the Parks and Recreation is “To enhance the quality of life by providing diverse recreational and healthy lifestyle opportunities”. The Youth Enrichment Scholarship Fund meets every aspect of this Mission and encourages participation from all socio economic portions of Blount County.
We hope you’ll add this event to your calendar.
